Do you ever need to use the pdf button.. Do you press it while the paper is going through. No mention in the quick start about the buttons.

Both buttons initiate a scan. In the Scanning pane of the NR preferences, you can specify exactly what type of scan each button initiates. For example, I have the SCAN button set to "Scan item using default color" (which is based on the settings for documents and receipts in the upper section of that same pane), and the PDF button to "Scan Additional Page".
