neatreciepts (both ver 2.5.5 & 1.5.9 ) install & runs perfectly fine under Vista. (I am using right now as we speak with no problems)
it is true that Neatreciepts has intentionally (for whatever reason .. probably because they have not completed all internal testing and don't want to take support calls on Vista compadibility if things blow up. your PC. ) they have written code that will detect Vista OS and pops up a "warning messages" and actually prevents the install on Vista.. (this was my experience, others may vary)
but fortunately Microsoft (being the OS manufacture) controls what software vendors (like Neatreciepts) can actually do.. and Vista is "smart enough" (if configured by the user) it encounters an issue where a software vendor tries to prevent install by doing OS detection.. Vista will say "ok fine.. I'm not Vista.. I'm now a Win XP PC... " the application will now say "oh Win XP.. that's cool I'll install & behave. ****(see below for disclaimer)
here's how to install the 2.5.5. . (advanced users only)
if your installing the application off the CD.. copy all the contents to a new directory on your PC or if you had Neatreciepts -say version 2.5.2 on XP that was working ok and you updated to Vista.. and now want to move from ver 2.5.2 to 2.5.5 download the update patch to a new directory and unzip... Now the trick is find all the *.exe files on the CD or unzipped file.. right click on them.. select compadibility mode.. and select "XP SP2" and "run as administrator" then run the setup it will install ok.. (worse case select every single file & start doing the same) once the application is installed.. go back and unselect compadibility mode.. & run as administrator .. reboot your PC ... now neatreciepts runs OK
***Disclaimer... obviously this is unsupported by Neatreciepts.. about 80% of applications that run on XP will run on Vista with no problems, 10% will also run but the installer of the program doesn't work on Vista, so doing the steps above will allow the app & run ok ... the last 10% you ***DO NOT*** want to install on Vista (without being Vista approved by the software vendor) are AntiVirus, Disk defrag, and some CDROM burning software.. same issue with drivers.. if some hardware doesn't work under Vista and no Vista driver exists.. try installing the Win XP or win2003 driver.. this is because Microsoft is trying to create a "unified driver model" meaning a driver written for one OS should work on everything
lastly .. if all else fails.. and an application just refuses to run... try installing Virtual PC 2007 free from MSFT on Vista (and actually install win XP in that virtual enviroment (be warned you need at least 20gb & 512mb dedicated to that enviroment) you are correct that vendors have known for years when Vista was going to RTM, the reality is (in my opinion) Neatreciepts is a growing company and there are lots of other things to focus on (like accounting software interoperbility) maybe they continue as a private company or they go public.. or they get purchased by Intuit, Adobe or even Microsoft and the reciept scanner because a "feature" of an existing product.. who knows..
